Hypertension is a common problem faced by women at different stages of life. Hypertension can be induced by a variety of factors and can even be triggered by lifestyle changes and diet. Hypertension can have multiple and varied effects on the health and longevity of an individual and therefore it has become extremely important to control it before, during and after pregnancy to prevent many complications.

Most guidelines and research studies focus mainly on the treatment and prevention of hypertension in pregnancy, especially the first few months, but little evidence is available for the management of hypertension post-pregnancy. Many experts recommend that pregnant women try to control their hypertension by following a high quality hypertension management programme which includes exercise, medication and dietary advice. This is particularly true when medication or drugs prescribed by the doctor are contraindicated or in some cases ineffective.

Medication is not a suitable or an effective way of managing hypertension as most medicines have side effects and can even be harmful to the unborn child and the mother. A combination of drugs with other methods such as healthy diet and moderate exercise can greatly reduce the effect of hypertension. These methods have been proven to be very effective in controlling hypertension.

For patients suffering from hypertension, low-dose calcium supplements and fish oil are usually recommended. Calcium supplements are usually taken before going to bed. Low-fat dairy products like milk are also recommended to avoid constipation, gas and bloating during the night. It is advisable to drink up to 8 glasses of water every day to keep the body hydrated.

Diet plays a key role in managing the condition. The amount of protein, fat, carbohydrates and sodium intake should be carefully monitored in order to maintain good health and prevent the development of complications. Low intake of such food items can also result in high blood pressure and hence regular monitoring of these levels can be helpful in the control of hypertension.

The intake of vitamin A and E are very important in maintaining a healthy weight as well as they help to prevent the development of kidney stones and inflammation. It is very important to avoid processed foods like red meat and dairy products as they increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Foods rich in Vitamin B complex and folate are highly recommended as they are known to reduce blood pressure.

Control of the stress level in the body helps in reducing hypertension. Regular exercise can improve the overall health of the body and reduce the risks of complications such as cancer and osteoporosis. The best way to control hypertension is by adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes a proper diet and regular exercise to help control the blood pressure.

Foods rich in fiber like oat bran and flax seeds help in controlling the pressure in the body and thus should be included in a daily diet. They can be found in the form of pills or capsules that contain the same active ingredients in natural food sources.

Diets that are high in potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium are known to control the blood pressure and they should be strictly followed during pregnancy. This also includes low-fat dairy products like cheese and milk, which are good for the baby's growth.

Intake of low-fat milk is recommended to avoid calcium deficiency, which is one of the causes of hypertension in pregnant women. Low-fat cheese is known to reduce the risk of hypertension and so is low-fat yogurt. It is important to ensure adequate intake of vitamins and minerals in order to prevent the development of certain diseases like osteoporosis and colon cancer in pregnant women.

Calcium supplements are also beneficial in controlling hypertension and should be taken regularly in order to control the condition. Calcium supplements can also be taken as part of a multi-vitamin supplement. As per the latest research, calcium has been found to be very effective in the prevention of certain types of breast cancer.

Hypertension can be controlled with the use of medication but this is only recommended in severe cases. It is highly recommended that if you suffer from hypertension then you should consult a doctor immediately and try to control the condition before it takes hold and causes complications.
